NSW records highest deaths in custody at 66 in 2025
New South Wales reports a record 66 deaths in custody and police operations in 2025, an increase of 18 from the previous year. A quarter of these deaths are attributed to self-harm, primarily by hanging, despite significant investments aimed at reducing ligature points in facilities.
